Construction workers damaged cables in Northcote and cut ADSL to less than 100 Telstra customers, a spokesman confirmed.

One customer, who runs a business in the Westfield and Albert streets area and did not want to be identified, said their internet had been out since last Tuesday.

The damage was expected to be repaired on Friday, but it has been delayed another week because of the seriousness of the damage.

BT Openreach have today confirmed that they are still working on a repair, after a number of homes and businesses in one area of Kings Norton lost telephone and Internet services. A third party accidentally caused the damage and engineers have had to replace around 350 metres of cabling .

If the damage is not fixed until then, it would be 17 days since the properties had internet.

"We apologise to our affected customers in the area, and assure them we are doing everything possible to return services back to normal as quickly as possible," the spokesman said.

The customer said they were feeling "completely helpless" after repairs were pushed back a week.

He said Telstra had committed to offering compensation, but said it was becoming difficult to run the business remotely, or through internet dongles, for such a long period.

The Telstra Outage website confirms internet is down in the area and that it's expected to be fixed next Friday.

"Yes, there's an outage at this location. It is affecting your internet service. We're sorry for the interruption. We're working on getting your service returned as fast as possible," the website says.

"Cable damage caused by independent construction in the area."
