Dozens of families were trapped in their cars underground at the Opera House after attending Vivid in Sydney last night.

The Macquarie Street exit was reportedly closed from 5pm until 11.30pm due to the winter festival, and patrons told 9News insufficient signage meant they were not forewarned.

"It was awful, I mean you know, the kids, the kids were starting to feel sick," Linda Fuller said, claiming there was "no warning" the exit would be closed.

Another woman, Nicole Milatos-Hayter, told 9News she even called triple zero to report an emergency.

She and her diabetic husband Graham Hayter were trapped for four hours.

"Some of the other kind passengers brought us some water which was nice and some chips as it got later and later," she said.

Police lifted the road block at 11.30pm.

A sign has now been erected at the entrance to the car park warning people that they won't get out between 5pm this evening and midnight.

Festival-goers who spoke to 9News said that last night there was no sign at the entrance and they had no idea when they went down the ramp, their exit would be blocked for up to six hours.

However, Wilson car parks insists there was signage warning of the closure.
