His charges included driving under the influence of a prohibited drug and without a licence, and failing to obey police directions.

The case was adjourned for three weeks for Mr Deligiannis to organise legal representation.

He remains on bail and is required to report weekly to police.

Outside court, Mr Deligiannis hid his face and avoided the waiting media asking questions about his connection to Mr Hoffmann.

Accused's brother a no-show in court

Mr Deligiannis' appearance came on the same day as the accused's older brother Clinton Hoffmann was due to face court on unrelated charges.

The 48-year-old prominent Darwin entrepreneur did not appear in court where he was listed on charges of assaults on workers and disorderly behaviour in a public place.

Colleagues of auto electrician Mr Hellings, who died at his home on Gardens Hill Crescent, issued a statement mourning the loss of a man hailed as a "great mentor".

Mr Hellings worked at transport and construction company Ostojic Group for 10 years, prior to which he was employed by Peter Brown Auto Electrics.

"Nigel was a great mentor in the workshop for new starters and young apprentices," his colleagues said.

"He had a world of knowledge as an auto electrician and at times it was difficult to find others with such hands-on experience.

"He had a happy outlook on life and was a dedicated hardworking man."

Mr Hellings retired from Ostojic in 2016, after which he "enjoyed much of his time travelling to and from Bali".

"As a young man Nigel worked in the UK/Isle of Man as an auto electrician and often spoke of his adventures overseas prior to moving to Australia," the colleagues wrote.

"Nigel was well-known in the Darwin sparky community and enjoyed the local watering holes along Mitchell Street."
