Man charged after Newcastle police officer assaulted.
A man has been charged after a police officer was allegedly assaulted in Newcastle. Police allege the 40-year-old man "unleashed a violet outburst" toward the occupants of a nearby car as he crossed the Beaumont Street, just after 10.30am yesterday. The officers, who were driving in an unmarked police car, used their siren to get the man's attention when he allegedly started kicking their vehicle and punched the driver through an open window. The man, from Nelsons Bay, ran away when confronted by police and was eventually capsicum-sprayed before being taken into custody.
