A 37-year-old man has been charged with raping and assaulting a young girl in regional NSW over a number of years when she was aged between seven and 10.

AAP understands the man is the girl's former stepfather with NSW Police stating the victim - who's now 11 - was attacked "by a man known to her".

The man was arrested at Wagga Wagga on Tuesday and charged with seven offences including having sexual intercourse with a child under 10, aggravated indecent assault of a victim under 16 and using someone under 14 to make child abuse material.

Detectives allege the man sexually and indecently assaulted the girl on numerous occasions at a Riverina home between October 2015 and February 2018.

The man's matter was mentioned briefly in Wagga Wagga Local Court on Wednesday.

He was refused bail and is scheduled to next appear at the same court on August 7.
