A 51-year-old man who police believed died in suspicious circumstances was mauled to death by his pet dog at his unit in Nowra, south of Sydney.

After neighbours reported concern for the man's welfare, police on Monday afternoon found his body with severe injuries, leading them to treat his death as a possible homicide.

They spent almost two days investigating the apartment this week.
