In court documents, it is alleged Ahn murdered Chan sometime between 3.10pm on June 12 and 6.24am on June 13.

Police said in a statement that they were called to the MRRC at about 6.30am on June 13 after Corrective Services staff found Chan dead.

"A section of the centre was sealed off as the crime scene was analysed by forensics experts and statements sought by investigators," police said.

Ahn was arrested by a detective about three and a half hours after the body was found, according to court documents. He was then charged with murder.

In his court appearance on Friday, Ahn chose to represent himself after speaking to a lawyer from Legal Aid.
