A man has been charged after a police officer was allegedly assaulted in Newcastle.

Police allege the 40-year-old man "unleashed a violet outburst" toward the occupants of a nearby car as he crossed the Beaumont Street, just after 10.30am yesterday.

The officers, who were driving in an unmarked police car, used their siren to get the man's attention when he allegedly started kicking their vehicle and punched the driver through an open window.

The man, from Nelsons Bay, ran away when confronted by police and was eventually capsicum-sprayed before being taken into custody.

The officer involved suffered a laceration to the mouth and some bruising and swelling. He was treated at John Hunter Hospital.

The alleged assault was captured on dashcam.

The man, who is on parole, was charged with assaulting police causing actual bodily harm, malicious damage and resist arrest.

He has been refused bail and will appear at Newcastle Local Court today.
