WARNING: The following story contains details that readers may find distressing

A little over a year ago young Melbourne model Baillee Schneider was found unconscious at her parents' Moonee Ponds house. A gold coloured cord was tied tightly around her neck.

The 25-year-old never regained consciousness and Ms Schneider's parents, who discovered her, were left to wonder whether a difficult period in her life, marked by occasional trouble with booze, drugs and erratic behaviour, had forced their vivacious daughter into an extreme act of self-harm.

At the first anniversary of Ms Schneider's death this weekend, Cameron and Sabine Schneider remain unsettled by aspects to her case, and police working under the direction of the Victorian Coroner continue to investigate.

Most confounding is the lack of an obvious point in the kitchen from which the 178 centimetre tall woman could have hung. Police and coronial officers returned to the Schneider house in April to again study the kitchen area and take photographs.

Police only recently took possession of two mobile phones belonging to Ms Schneider. It is unclear why her phones were not seized on the day of her death to determine who she last spoke to and to gain an insight into her state of mind.

A spokeswoman for the Coroner's Court this week said an "active investigation" was continuing into Ms Schneider's death. The Coroner has yet to decide whether to hold an inquest.

A much older boyfriend

At the time of her death, Ms Schneider had been in a relationship with Melbourne events promoter, Antony Hampel, 51, for about 9 months.

Mr Hampel is believed to among the last people who communicated with Ms Schneider before her death.

There is no suggestion he was involved in or was responsible for her death.

The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald approached Mr Hampel for comment through his lawyer, Arnold Bloch Leibler partner, Leon Zwier.

Mr Hampel, the son of retired Supreme Court judge George Hampel and the stepson of Federal Court judge Felicity Hampel, was also the boyfriend of another much younger woman whose death sparked another coronial inquest, Phoebe Handsjuk.

Mr Hampel was a witness at the inquest into Ms Handsjuk’s 12-storey plunge down a garbage chute from the floor of the high-rise apartment she shared with him.

Even Paul Schneider (who played Mark) was confused by the plan the writers and producers laid out. Fans even get to see what happens to Jean Ralphio who was just a recurring character. Ann and Chris Treager re-appeared in the finale after their absence.

In the 2016 podcast Phoebe’s Fall, The Age extensively covered the lead-up to Ms Handsjuk’s 2010 death, including her volatile relationship with Mr Hampel and the controversial inquest finding which cleared him of any involvement.

Like Phoebe Handsjuk, Ms Schneider often dated older men. Other similarities included their stunning looks, self-esteem issues and difficulties coping with alcohol. But both could also be great fun, able to light up a room with their presence, and were treasured by their friends. Both cared deeply for animals and had a sensitive side, often expressed in personal diaries.

The pain of not knowing how all of this came to be is palpable when you sit with Ms Schneider's parents.

They acknowledge their daughter had her struggles and a taste for the wild side. But the lack of any note to explain her feelings, her decision to take out a life insurance policy three weeks prior to her death and the mystery over where in the kitchen she could have affixed the cord continue to gnaw away at them.

“None of us can understand how she could have done this to herself,” Mr Schneider said. “It’s not impossible but it is hard to see how.”

Like all families grappling with the loss of a child and sibling, Mr Schneider said it was difficult not to have any conclusive explanation after a year.

“Yes we want resolution but not at the expense of the truth. So it is encouraging police and the Coroner are being thorough,” he said.

Triple zero call

On a winter’s Saturday morning one year ago, Cameron and Sabine Schneider went to the local shops, telling their daughter they would be back in an hour or two.

She was curled up on the couch in the lounge-room next to the family dog, Edna, talking intently into her phone. She had attended a backyard barbeque with Mr Hampel the night before and was upset after rowing with him. But by the time her parents left, she had recovered her composure.

When the Schneiders returned, they found their eldest girl lying unconscious on the kitchen floor, her head uncomfortably placed into the skirting boards near a corner cupboard. Around her neck was a cord from her bedroom.

It was apparent that she had poured a glass of wine and had smoked a cigarette while her parents were out. Her portable blue-tooth speaker also appeared to have been used.

According to her parents, Ms Schneider's toxicology report showed traces of cocaine and a relatively low blood alcohol level.

Ms Schneider had been having a difficult time in the months leading up to her death. She had become more secretive and began working at Melbourne’s strip clubs, introducing her to unhealthy influences. She had become adept at concealing the reality of her life from her parents.

There were still happy times as well, such as international modelling shoots in Fiji and Thailand or simple family birthday celebrations dancing to music.

Ms Schneider had kept her relationship with Mr Hampel extremely low profile. Despite sharing trips to the Gold Coast and Tasmania, as well as dinners out, she hardly ever posted photos of them together on social media.

On one of the few occasions she did, Ms Schneider told her mother that Mr Hampel was trying to educate her on the finer points of wine.

Mr Hampel started seeing Ms Schneider after the collapse of his marriage to Melbourne woman Emily Williams, who now lives in London. Mr Hampel and Ms Williams began their relationship after the 2010 death of Phoebe Handsjuk in what remains one of Australia's most unusual deaths.

Death in a garbage chute

Coroner Peter White determined that Ms Handsjuk died as a result of a tragic accident. Under the influence of alcohol and sleeping drug Stilnox, she had entered the garbage chute on the building's 12th floor feet-first, he found.

His judgment says she controlled her descent into the ground floor compactor room only to have the blade of the machine almost sever her leg at the ankle, causing her to bleed to death.

Coroner White's counsel assisting, barrister Deborah Siemensma submitted that an open finding be made, meaning third-party involvement and suicide could not be excluded. Coroner White ignored the advice and delivered the accidental finding.

Mr Hampel, whose lawyers opposed an inquest, has strenuously denied any involvement or knowledge of Ms Handsjuk's death and The Age does not suggest otherwise. Mr Hampel told Ms Handsjuk's inquest that he was trying to help his young girlfriend control her drinking and improve her mental health.

According to Ms Schneider’s mother, Sabine, her daughter had said that Mr Hampel was trying to help her moderate her drinking, improve her self esteem and even tried to introduce her to veganism. Ms Schneider, a qualified dental assistant, had also begun studying again in a bid to get her life back on track.

A scare

Shortly before her death, Ms Schneider had been in contact with Victoria Police about an alleged sexual assault in the early hours of the morning at a hotel near Albert Park.

The details around what happened are murky. In an indication of how secretive and unpredictable aspects of her life had become, a man - not Mr Hampel - arrived at the Schneiders' Moonee Ponds house late in the night and walked around the back of the house looking for Ms Schneider. This was witnessed by Ms Schneider's brother, who was up late partying with some old friends from Tasmania.

None of them recognised the man but Ms Schneider seemed to go with him willingly and get into a car that had been waiting out the front.

The next day, Ms Schneider's younger sister Lilli received a phone call from Mr Hampel. He told Lilli that her sister had sent him a disturbing text message and was clearly upset by something. Ms Schneider later phoned her sister and told her about an alleged sexual assault that had happened at the hotel. Lilli convinced her sister to report it to police.

A detective was assigned to investigate Ms Schneider's complaint but for some reason the young woman withdrew it and was adamant that she would not be pressing charges.

There is no suggestion Mr Hampel was involved in this incident and Ms Schneider had told her family she did not want him to know about it.

Her last post

In her last Facebook post on June 15, 2018, Ms Schneider wrote powerfully in response to the rape and murder of Melbourne comedian Eurydice Dixon in Carlton North two days earlier. She was particularly exercised by a police message urging people to take care while walking alone at night.

“How about it's just not ok to assault and murder women!! How are women supposed to come forward about rape and assault when the police make comments like this and victim blame...".

After Ms Schneider's death, her mother Sabine contacted Mr Hampel, who she has never met, to let him know the grim news. He expressed his sympathy and added that he had been trying to help her blossom.

Mr Hampel was not among the 150 or more people who attended the celebration of Ms Schneider's life at a memorial service at a Kensington hall.

On Sunday, a small group of Ms Schneider’s friends gathered at her parents house to commemorate the 12 month anniversary of her death while they await answers on why this young woman’s life ended so prematurely.
