(ABC News) Two pet dogs thwarted a sexual assault on a woman at a cemetery in Melbourne's west, fending off the man who had attacked their owner.

The woman was walking her dogs — a shih tzu and a terrier cross — in Williamstown cemetery when she was approached from behind by a man about 8:30pm on June 29.

The man pushed the woman to the ground and attempted to pull her pants down, police said.

The woman's dogs attacked the man, who ran off towards KC White Reserve on Park Crescent.

'It's a cemetery, not a playground': Graveyard worker unleashes on a mother for feeding her child near the dead - and some say he's got a point

'It's a cemetery, not a playground': Graveyard worker unleashes on a mother for feeding her child near the dead - and some say he's got a point The mother took to Reddit to say she had stopped by the New Zealand cemetery for a quick bite on Wednesday. 'I was walking home with my young boy, and decided to grab a bite from the bakery. 'I thought I'd look for a park, because he's in the pram and it's just a lot easier to sit somewhere and eat.' Finding no parks nearby, the mother wheeled her hungry son into a cemetery and sat down on a park bench to eat.

The woman ran home and contacted police, who set up a crime scene at the cemetery and forensically examined the area.

Police are appealing for information on the incident as they hunt the attacker.

"We know people congregate at the cemetery at night so we are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the assault or may have been in the area at the time," Detective Senior Constable Jenna Sladek said.

The man is described as having a large build, and was wearing a black puffer jacket and white beanie.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
