The 11.7m-long catamaran overturned seven nautical miles off the coast of Stockton Beach in Newcastle about 10.10am yesterday.

Police from Marine Area Command, as well as the Marine Rescue Association and the RAAF attended after an emergency beacon was activated.

The catamaran had left Port Stephens yesterday morning and was heading south towards Ettalong, on a trip to the NSW Central Coast, when it overturned.

A father, 50, and daughter, 16, were the sole survivors in a catamaran disaster off the NSW coast which killed the girl's grandparents , both 78, and another man.

The 16-year-old girl and her 50-year-old father were found clinging to the overturned boat and were winched from the water before being taken to John Hunter Hospital.

They are currently being treated for hypothermia.

The girl's grandparents, both 78-years-old, were unable to be saved.

A 67-year-old friend of the family who was on board at the time also died.

"The Westpac crew members were confronted with was quite a high sea with strong winds at approximately 30 knots," NSW Ambulance spokesperson Luke Wiseman said at a press conference.

"Also what made the rescue quite difficult is being an overturned vessel, there was quite a lot of debris and ropes in the water at the time.
