Emergency services were called to the property on Oaklands Road about 3.30am. They extinguished the fire in half an hour but were not able to save Mr Green.

Mr Green has been remembered as a former master of the Oaklands Hunt Club and a lifelong member of the Oakland Pony Club, where he had taught children to ride for over 30 years.

A horse gave a touching farewell to his owner before he was laid to rest. Lima's brother knew his best friend, a horse named Sereno, should attend the funeral. When the vehicle carrying the casket pulled up at a gathering of mourners, Sereno seemed to know Lima was in there.

"We're all terribly upset, absolutely sad," neighbour Margaret Hurry told Nine News.

"It's terrible, just can't believe it. It's just so sad.

"He loved the horses and did all the farm work here with the horses and the Hunt Club at Oaklands."

Friends and other riding associations have taken to social media to pay tribute.

One horse trials association wrote: "Darren was part of our committee for many years, he always had time to talk and was always happy to help wherever he could.

"Darren will be missed by all who were fortunate to know him, our thoughts are with Darren's family and friends.

"The equestrian world will be a little less bright without you in it."

Another association described Mr Green as "a constant source of advice, support and inspiration for the entire team, Darren will forever be in our hearts".

Police are still investigating the cause of the fire.
