New figures show the number of confirmed cases in the state is five times what is usually experienced at this point in the flu season.

"This age group is particularly susceptible to potentially fatal complications from flu, such as sepsis and pneumonia, because their immune system is still developing, and they may lack previous exposure to flu," immunisation program chief Dr Jonathan Malo told 9News.
