Police probe deaths of elderly couple in Newcastle An elderly husband and wife have been found dead in Newcastle. Emergency services were called to a home on Newcastle Street in Stockton about 6am. A woman, aged 75, was found dead inside the property. A short time later, police were alerted to a concern for welfare on nearby Stockton Beach. The body of a man, 76, was found in the surf and retrieved. Detectives and forensic crews remain at the scene. Sections of Newcastle Street and an area near Stockton Beach have been cordoned off by police. No one else is being sought over the deaths.

The court heard the incident erupted after Thomson dropped in on Ms Cooper on his surf mat and began aggressively veering towards her.

Ms Cooper told the court she feared for her life as she was grabbed by the head and repeatedly held underwater.

"My lungs were burning. I thought I was going to drown, I was fearful for my life."

A sentence will be handed down next month.

The magistrate has ordered that Mr Thomson be assessed for his suitability for community service work.
