A teenager and an elderly man are fighting for their lives after both being struck by buses in separate incidents in Melbourne overnight.

"The number of pedestrians being killed at the moment is a concern to us,” NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy told reporters this week.

“There’s a whole range of things that contribute to pedestrians getting killed - the pedestrians themselves are walking across the road distracted, they’re walking against red traffic control signal lights, they’re walking where there’s no crossing on the road, they’re walking in places which make it difficult for everyone to see them.

“As far as drivers are concerned, they need to take more notice of people walking on the side of the road and generally around the city area.”
