A mystery man seen arguing with an Australian man and his girlfriend on a remote Canadian highway could hold the key to solving their murders.

Lucas Fowler, 23, and his American partner Chynna Deese were found dead near the Alaska Highway last Monday, about 20 kilometres south of the Liard Hot Springs.

Local police said the pair had been shot.

Road worker Alandra Hull told 9News she saw Mr Fowler and Ms Deese on the highway the night before they were found dead, talking with a man who "kind of looked frustrated or something".

The family of Lucas’ girlfriend, Chynna Deese, are from North Carolina.

9News understands that, at this stage, they will not be travelling to Canada.

The motive behind this tragedy remains somewhat of a mystery.

Police are still trying to narrow down the time frame in which the couple were killed.

It’s understood they are currently speaking with locals who may have seen the couple the night before their bodies were discovered.

Mr Broughton was a mechanic.

"This makes my heart so sad," Ms Broughton wrote on Facebook.

"I can't believe that this young couple are dead now."

The RCMP released photos of Mr Fowler, Ms Deese and their Chevrolet on Friday and issued a request for witnesses who were on the freeway between 4pm Sunday, July 14, and 8am Monday, July 15, to come forward.
