UK's Chancellor will resign if Boris Johnson becomes PM

UK's Chancellor will resign if Boris Johnson becomes PM Philip Hammond has revealed he will resign as the UK's Chancellor if Boris Johnson wins the Conservative leadership contest and becomes prime minister. Mr Hammond said he would quit before being sacked due to his staunch opposition to a no-deal Brexit, something Mr Johnson has not ruled out pursuing if he cannot get changes to Theresa May's Brexit deal.

Boris Johnson has broken cover for the first time since reacting to the vote for Brexit to set out how the country may look if he wins the race to succeed David Cameron as prime minister. Amid clamour for the leave campaign’s leaders to set out what happens next, Johnson claimed Britain will be able to

Editor’s note: The opinions in this article are the author’s, as published by our content partner, and do not represent the views of MSN or Microsoft.

When Jeremy Hunt was British health secretary, he called me in for a chat on mental health. He picked my brains. I picked his. Then he said something that left me open-mouthed. The man who is one step away from being prime minister - though he will lose to Boris Johnson - said he had been watching a documentary about me, in which I talked about my depression. "I said to my wife 'why would Alastair Campbell get depression? He has a great life'." Open-mouthed. It is one thing for Joe Public to think depression is a lifestyle choice. This was the health secretary.

Assuming that Boris Johnson becomes the next prime minister, I understand that his conditions for serving in It means that all work on existing legislation stops, and MPs and Lords stop sitting. How a Boris Johnson cabinet could shape up. Tory leadership favourite would have to keep all sides of

Boris Johnson said he would not stand to be Tory leader after Michael Gove, his colleague in the leave campaign, entered the race. Gove had earlier announced his own candidature, saying he did not believe Johnson has the necessary leadership skills to lead the country. Theresa May launched her

Two more British politicians you may have heard of. When Theresa May spoke for the first time as Prime Minister, she said mental health would be a "priority". I suggest she look it up in the dictionary. It means "more important than other things". Brexit anyone? The words were easy. Many services have gone backwards.

For her predecessor David Cameron, another victim of the Brexit curse, it was a "priority" too. He made a series of "historic pledges". If you had psychosis you would see a psychiatrist within a maximum of two weeks. Jesus! I have had psychosis. The physical health equivalent is smashing through a car windscreen and breaking a dozen bones as you bounce down the highway.

I don’t underestimate the difficulties. There are many demands on the public purse and politicians’ time. Also, centuries of stigma affect them too. How else to explain that only half a dozen of British Parliamentarians have openly talked of their own mental health challenges, especially given political life is something of a laboratory for mental ill health what with separation from family, abuse, working hours, pressure, stress.

Boris 'unusually close' with Australia

Boris 'unusually close' with Australia Former foreign minister Julie Bishop, who worked closely with Boris Johnson, says he has an unusually close relationship with Australia for a UK prime minister.

Main public face of Brexit makes shock announcement hours after his key ally Michael Gove launched his own campaign.

Supporters of the Tory leadership favourite fear the departure of the Chancellor and David Gauke will cause serious problems in Westminster and Brussels. Hammond, meanwhile, told this morning’s Andrew Marr Show : “Assuming Boris Johnson becomes the next prime minister, I understand his

So it is hard. I get that. But every time I hear a politician say "isn’t it great we are talking about this more?" I want to scream. Yes, breaking down the stigma is important. But not nearly as important as dealing with the scale of the problem. Suicide the biggest killer of young men, an epidemic of anxiety and self-harm among young women, a boom in anti-depressants. Indeed my worry is that as the stigma fades and my kids’ generation become more open about their struggles, we don’t have the services to meet the growing demand.

So what would a good mental health system look like? It would be that – a "mental health" system, not merely "mental illness". That means encouraging knowledge and awareness from the early years. It means sport. It means diet. It means alcohol and drugs policy. It means proper support in schools and colleges so that signs are spotted early. It means care being available close to home. It means support in the home. It means especial focus not least in research on the serious illnesses like that whose medication helped take 20 years off my brother Donald’s life, schizophrenia. It means making real the promise of parity of esteem between physical and mental health.

Rumours of Boris Johnson 's leadership ambitions have gained fresh momentum in recent days. For Boris Johnson to throw his hat into the leadership ring, he would need to be supported by any two MPs with the Stepping in now means owning the problem, and no one appears very keen to do that.”

To politicians on the left, what can be more progressive than looking after those who may need support? But to the right, and here that means the government, I say a proper mental health policy as opposed to mental illness crisis policy will save you big time over time. Invest in the well being of the young and you invest in the future. Look not just at the emotional cost of suicide, the ultimate in mental illness, but the financial cost. Go and sit not just in psychiatric hospitals but family courts, visit a prison, and ask yourself how many of the ghastly, costly stories you see might have been prevented if we had had mental health front of mind rather than waiting for mental illness.

No country has got this right yet. When one does, others will follow. I think of little old Ireland and its leadership role in anti-smoking legislation. It spread like a health virus around the world. How many lives has that saved? How much healthier are we now smoking is on the decline and banned in most public places?

Where Ireland led on smoking why can’t Australia lead on mental health? With Boris Johnson about to become PM at home, I have given up on my own government leading the way. Come on ScoMo. Get with the mental health mojo. Show BoJo. Lead the world.
