Senior Labor Party figures have revealed they believe Jackie Trad's integrity crisis could cost the government at the next election - and the Premier her leadership.

Former Labor speaker of the house John Mickel today spoke to 9News under a new hat, as an adjunct professor at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) where he specialises in Public Policy.

Mr Mickel believes the next state election, which is less than 18 months away, is right now "too close to call" but warns there's 18 marginal seats, and nine of them are north of the Noosa River, putting the government at risk in the regions.

Mr Mickel wouldn't speculate on besieged Deputy Premier Jackie Trad's future but told 9News "all of these things have a cumlulative effect if left unattended", in reference to the Trad integrity saga.

Mr Mickel was an adviser to Queensland Premier Wayne Goss and later became an MP himself, serving under Premier Peter Beattie in various portfolios before becoming speaker of the house.

He retired from politics in 2012.

The opposition has repeatedly called for the Premier to stand down her deputy over the saga, and allegations Ms Trad has broken the ministerial code of conduct and handbook.
