Driver killed, passenger critical after crash in Melbourne's north A man has died and another is in a critical condition following a serious crash in Melbourne's north overnight. The driver died at the scene after a white Ford Falcon smashed into a pole on a median strip in Kalimna Crescent, Coolaroo, about 9.20pm last night. His passenger, a man aged in his 20s, suffered life-threatening head injuries and was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition. The name of the driver and the passenger has not been revealed. It has not yet been disclosed how they know each other. Police are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the crash.

A woman whose husband, a veteran police officer, was killed by a drunk and drug-affected driver while on a charity motorbike ride has faced her husband's killer in court and told him he ruined her life.

Pauline Kostiuk turned to look at Jesse Reid, 22, as he sat in the dock at the Melbourne County Court and choked back tears as she confronted him.

"Jesse Reid I stand before you destroyed … you killed the love of my life," she said.

Victor Kostiuk, 59, was killed while taking part in the Wall to Wall charity ride from Melbourne to Canberra in September 2018.

The court heard Reid had spent at least two hours driving from Merimbula, on the south coast of NSW, towards Melbourne when he veered onto the wrong side on the road and crashed into Mr Kostiuk's motorcycle.

The long-serving detective senior sergeant died at the scene and his son, fellow police officer Felix Kostiuk, witnessed the incident.

"It is burned in my mind and I can never forget it…watching the life go from his eyes," Felix Kostiuk said in a victim impact statement to the court today.

"My mum has lost her soulmate and I have seen her destroyed … I was forced to watch my father die and now I have to watch my mother die a slow death.

Friend blew into interlock device

The court heard that earlier in the day Reid had received a text message telling him his pregnant partner had gone into early labour.

Drunk and high on the drug ice, he got his 16-year-old friend to blow into the interlock device so his car would start.

On a social media video played in the court, Reid is heard thanking his friend.

"When you're too f***ed to drive and your mate comes through," he's heard saying.

He later received a text message from his mother explaining the baby had been born.

"No rush … drive safe and don't speed," the message read.

But despite the warning, Reid reached speeds of up to 200kph on the drive to Melbourne.

In Snapchat videos the friend is heard egging Reid on yelling "go, go, go" as he reaches speeds above 180kph.

As Reid approached the charity riders near Orbost in Victoria's Latrobe Valley, one witness estimated he was travelling at 130kph.

Both Felix and Victor Kostiuk tried to avoid Reid, but Victor was struck by the speeding driver head on, causing the car to spin and the front wheel of Reid's car to dislodge.

Felix Kostiuk said after the incident he ran to his father's aid.

He said the driver then approached him with a clenched fist.

Felix Kostiuk then said to him: "What the f*** have you done?"

"You killed my dad."

Reid replied: "What did you say c***?"

Reid was then arrested by an off-duty police officer and has been in custody since then.

'I miss his strength'

Felix Kostiuk said he had severe post-traumatic stress, suffered up to 10 flashbacks an hour and was unable to return to work as a police officer.

He said the memories were "piercing and pervasive", tearing apart his brain "fibre from fibre".

Mr Kostiuk's voice hardly quivered as he spoke to the offender.

Pauline Kostiuk said since the crash she had been diagnosed with depression and had to leave her full-time job.

She said Reid had "taken away everything (she) enjoyed in life".

"Your selfish and reckless decision-making has ruined my life," she said.

"Without him I am lost, I miss his strength, I miss his guidance but most of all I miss having someone to love."

Victor Kostiuk was working as the officer in charge of the family violence unit at Frankston and had been a police officer for 38 years.

Reid pleaded guilty to recklessly endangering life and causing injury as well as culpable driving, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

He will be sentenced at a later date.
