Widowed mum who lost house to bank struggling in 'nightmare' new home© ACA Stephanie Stevens has lashed out at Bankwest after it repossessed the home she bought with her late husband.

The couple's mortgage on their house with Bankwest was in Ryan's name, meaning Stephanie was frozen out for the five months it took for her to be named as Ryan's beneficiary.

By that time, his life insurance fell $30,000 short of covering the mortgage.

Bankwest repossessed the home and auctioned it off, despite Stephanie's parents Wendy and Brad offering to be guarantors on the property and make up the shortfall.

The couple first bought the four-bedroom home in 2013 for $520,000, and it was sold five years later for $450,000.

Although Bankwest apologised to Stephanie afterwards, she was still forced to rush her young family into a new residence – which ended up being a lemon.

Even after eight months work on improving it has been slow, thanks to issues such as finding asbestos that was not on the build report.

"Just a bit of a nightmare really, the offer was accepted and then I did a building inspection and that's when the issues started to come out," Stephanie said.

So the challenge was set – turning this nightmare house into a happy home for Stephanie and Ollie in just two weeks.

And along with the businesses and community members pitching in after being touched by Stephanie's story, A Current Affair and Channel Nine also brought on some high-profile help from people who know a thing or two about renovating.
