An elderly man who was stabbed to death outside his home in Melbourne's outer east has been identified as father and retiree Antonio 'Tony' Salaris.

Police are appealing to the public for information after Mr Salaris, 73, was seen lying on the ground being attacked by a man near his home in Browning Street, Kilsyth about 9am on Wednesday.

Mr Salaris was stabbed to death and his body found just outside a neighbouring property on Browning Street. The attacker fled the scene and neighbours called police.

They are also keen for CCTV or dashcam footage.

"At this stage we don’t know why Tony has been killed and we are working to piece together what has happened in the lead up to him being stabbed," lead homicide squad Detective Inspector Tim Day said.

"It's all a bit close to home," he said.

"It made me go around and check all the doors were locked."
