Firefighters on the Sunshine Coast have worked through the night to contain a massive golf course blaze that threatened homes near a popular resort.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at Noosa Springs Golf Club at Noosa Heads early today that came within metres of homes.

The blaze was brought under control after about 40 minutes but thick smoke remains over the area.

"There is still a fair amount of smoke remaining through the areas so there may be some ill effects on residents from the smoke," Robert Smith of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services told 9News.
