A woman has been killed while crossing the road in a hit-run collision in Melbourne's south-east.

Police say the woman, who hasn't been identified, was crossing Wellington Road near Scenic Boulevard in Clayton when she was hit by a car.

The dark-coloured wagon was travelling west about 9.45pm when it hit and killed the woman.

She died at the scene and the driver of the car did not stop.

The vehicle was later found dumped at a property on North Road in Clayton about 11pm.

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for public assistance.
