Detective Acting Superintendent Brendan Smith said police had identified the dead man, who "would appear to be a drug user with some sort of criminal history".

The caller said the body was near the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club.

The body had been removed from the beach by 10.30am and the stretch of sand was not a crime scene.
