A spokesperson confirmed that "some wreckage" was seen in the area by a Westpac chopper along with an oil slick in the water.

They couldn't confirm if it belonged to the Bell UH1 helicopter, known as a "Huey".

Police say they haven't heard from the aircraft since it faded off the radar about 6.30pm yesterday.
