Police have revealed that an 11-year-old boy was the driver of a vehicle that overturned and killed a young girl in northern Western Australia at the weekend.

Abbey Forrest, 11, died after being thrown from the vehicle when the driver lost control four-wheel driving on marsh flats near the town of Wyndham on Saturday.

The other passengers were not seriously injured, and major crash investigators travelled to the site on Monday.

Abbey Forrest was recently awarded the Young Person of the Year Award at the East Kimberley Aboriginal Achievement Awards, and had been offered four separate scholarships for schools around Australia.

Her brother Tom Forrest, who is a reporter for the ABC, said she was due to fly to Perth yesterday to begin her induction at a private school.

"A lot of people knew who she was and what she'd done at such a young age," he said.

"I want people to remember her personality, for what she'd done and the impact she'd made on people's lives."

He said it was difficult to comment on the circumstances of the crash.

The accident was one of two fatal crashes in 24 hours for the East Kimberley.
