A three-storey apartment block in St Kilda has been evacuated after a fire engulfed its upper floor.

A social media post reported people shouting from the Dalgety Street building, although it is understood no one has been injured.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade crews made it to the address after "panicked" calls were received by its triple zero call centre about 7pm on Wednesday.

Eight vehicles, including high angle rescue specialists, arrived in about five minutes to find the top floor of the 200 square-metre building well alight.

Firefighters fought the blaze from inside and outside the building and brought it under control about 8.15pm.

It appeared no one was home in the four affected apartments on the top floor, while the other residents managed to self-evacuate.

Paramedics were at the scene on standby.

A truck is expected to remain on Dalgety Street overnight to make sure the fire doesn't reignite. Its cause was still being investigated.
