A search has resumed for a fisherman who is thought to have been swept off the rocks near Phillip Island.

Emergency services were called to Punchbowl Road near San Remo about 3.30pm on Sunday after reports a man had been swept off the rocks.

Police believe he may have been fishing when he fell into the water.

The search resumed at first light on Monday.

On Christmas Eve last year, a man and his adult son got caught in a rip on Phillip Island and drowned.

Paramedics pulled the 45-year-old father from the water and performed CPR, however he could not be revived and was declared dead at the scene.

His son, a 20-year-old man, was also pulled from the water and died at the scene.
