A woman has been shot by police on a suburban street in Geraldton, about 400 kilometres north of Perth.

According to a police statement, officers were at a house in the suburb of Karloo when the woman was shot.

(ABC News: Natasha Harradine) "During an incident at the address, an officer discharged their firearm causing a woman to receive a gunshot wound," the statement said.

The woman was taken to Geraldton Regional Hospital by St John Ambulance.

WA Police are remaining tight-lipped on whether the woman survived the shooting.

There were reports on social media about a woman in the area behaving erratically in the hours before the shooting.
