Hockey praises Trump ahead of Morrison visit

Hockey praises Trump ahead of Morrison visit Ambassador of Australia to the United States Joe Hockey has praised President Donald Trump ahead of Scott Morrison’s state visit, but he has advised the prime minister to avoid becoming too "casual" with the relationship. In an interview on Paul Murray Live, Mr Hockey noted the president’s ability to meet his election promises. Mr Morrison will head to Washington DC for the first state visit to the US by an Australian prime minister since John Howard in 2006 and will be given the rare privilege of a state dinner at the White House.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison's State visit to the United States is in full swing as he and his wife Jenny Morrison were welcomed to the White House.

Dozens of military officers carrying the flags of both countries lined the lower balcony of the white house ahead of the arrival of both leaders.

Following the national anthems of both nations, the leaders met with dignitaries before delivering remarks on the enduring friendship between the two democracies.

Scott Morrison is being treated to a state dinner with Donald Trump — but there are always strings attached

Scott Morrison is being treated to a state dinner with Donald Trump — but there are always strings attached Australian PMs go to Washington all the time — but this isn't a standard visit. And there are good reasons that Trump is putting on a state dinner for Morrison this time, writes Emma Shortis.

It's the first state dinner for an Australian prime minister in 13 years and only the second for the Trump administration.

The PM will give President Trump a bronze figurine of Leslie "Bull" Allen crafted especially by Australian sculptor Scott Edwards for the visit.

Bull Allen was an Australian stretcher-bearer during World War Two.

He was awarded for rescuing twelve American casualties while under fire on Mount Tambu, New Guinea, on 30 July 1943.

The statue is designed to symbolise the enduring mateship between the peoples of Australia and the United States of America.

Mrs Morrison is giving First Lady Melania a set of Paspaley classic stud earrings.

They feature two eight-milimetre baroque Australian South Sea Keshi Pearls from Wester Australia and are made of 750-mark yellow gold.

And the PM and Mrs Morrison will give the President and First Lady a personalised Socceroos jersey for their son, Barron - a keen soccer fan.
