Emergency crews rushed to the home at Margate, about 27km north-east of Brisbane, where they found "a unit engulfed in flames".

The 64-year-old man was not breathing when he was found by firefighters on the floor of the unit.

Paramedics were able to restore his heartbeat and he was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a critical condition about 4am Wednesday.

Residents in neighbouring units were also evacuated, but have since been allowed back into their homes.

Police have declared the home a crime scene, with fire investigators at the unit on Disraeli Street.
