Perth angler Lee Ferguson and his friend Ryan Thornton had been fishing off the coast of Pinnaroo Point on Sunday morning.

They were no more than two kilometres from the shore when they noticed more fish than usual jumping around the boat at about 8am.

As the men watched the water, they both saw the unmistakable silhouette of a great white shark coming towards the surface.

Mr Thornton told Daily Mail Australia he had remarked only moments earlier that he had never seen a great white shark - but had always hoped he would.

'Though next time I’d rather a slightly larger boat,' he said.

He said he had no reason to expect to see the shark that day.

Meanwhile Mr Ferguson said the moments leading up to and during the sighting were nerve wracking.

'It took about 30 seconds before we were face to face with (the) great white shark, we estimate it was approximately 4.5 metres in length,' Mr Ferguson told Perth Now.

The shark was as big as the boat the fishermen were in, which brought home the stark reality of their situation.

'It was around this time that we thought it was a bad idea to be out there with a shark bigger than my boat!' he said.

'We quickly pulled the anchor and left to allow the beautiful shark to feed in peace.'

The men described the experience as 'terrifying and awesome at the same time' however Mr Ferguson now has permission to get a bigger boat.

'Lee has got approval for a bigger boat from his wife too, so he is happy. All in all a good day,' Mr Thornton said.
