However the officers detained the man with the help of bystanders, who were praised by senior police.

"Those members of the public that came forward with no regard for their own safety, helped out just a couple of blokes doing their job," Superintendent Danny Sullivan told reporters on Sunday.

Supt Sullivan said he was "exceptionally proud" of the two officers and "the courage they displayed".

Both officers were taken to hospital in a stable condition, and one has since been released.

The Bronte man is due to appear in the Newcastle Local Court on Monday charged with two counts of wounding with intent to resist arrest, destroy/damage property, common assault, and breach of bail for drug-related offences.
