A Riverland man has appeared in the Berri Magistrates Court this afternoon charged over the alleged indecent assault of an eight-year-old at the weekend.

The court heard the accused allegedly assaulted the child just before 11:00pm on Sunday in a public toilet of a Riverland venue.

Police said the 23-year-old man was yesterday arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated indecent assault.

In court today, police prosecutors said the accused — who cannot be named for legal reasons — was a known patron of the venue and was identified by staff on the venue's CCTV cameras entering the bathroom at the time of the alleged assault.

Prosecutors said police also later visited the accused's home and found clothing matching those worn in the footage. They then questioned the accused.

"He denied going to the unisex toilet and denies doing any drugs or alcohol," prosecutors said.

The prosecution went on to say the accused, who sat emotionless in court, had a history of offending which included the aggravated assault of a seven-year-old victim in 2011.

The accused stood in court and asked Magistrate Cathy Deland if the welfare of his pets could be considered before she made a decision on his request for home detention bail.

Magistrate Deland said she would order the accused to be transferred to the Adelaide Remand Centre until it could be determined if the accused's home was suitable for home detention bail.
