Aboriginal elder defends wombat stoning
An Aboriginal elder has defended an indigenous police officer who was filmed stoning a wombat to death. The video, which was posted online, shows a shirtless man stalking a lone wombat at night time on a dirt road in the Eyre Peninsula, with a car slowly following behind.
Gundari, a Ngarringman-Moolybutta man, blamed his actions of brutally beating, raping and threatening to kill two foreign tourists in Broome in 2006 on an Aboriginal curse imposed over a woman's death in a remote community.
The then 32-year-old also told a court he would be speared in the leg as traditional punishment.
In two separate incidents, Gundari attacked and raped a 24-year-old French woman and a 32-year-old Japanese woman after dragging them into secluded areas of Broome late at night.
The French woman lost four front teeth and fractures to her face during her battering and the Japanese woman was knocked unconscious and raped while still out cold.
The arrest of Gundari in Katherine relates to charges of going armed in public; damage to property and riotous behaviour in a public place.
He is due to appear in Katherine Local Court on Thursday.
