Sydney's T6 Carlingford heavy rail between Parramatta Road and Carlingford will close permanently on January 5, 2020 to allow for the construction of the new Parramatta Light Rail.

Transport NSW said while the replacement Westmead to Carlingford via Parramatta's CBD light rail service was built the area would be serviced by a new bus route.

The 535 will operate from January 5, 2020 between Carlingford, Telopea, Dundas, Rydalmere, Camellia/Rosehill and Parramatta CBD.

NSW Opposition Leader Jodi McKay on Thursday criticised the NSW government for "hiding" from the announced January 2020 closure, instead leaving it to Transport NSW.

“You know the Berejiklian Liberal government is embarrassed about what the Parramatta Light Rail project has become when it uses Transport for NSW to smuggle out news like this,” Ms McKay said.

Serious doubts have been raised about the second stage of the project, which would run from Rydalmere to Olympic Park via Melrose Park and Wentworth Point after the team working on the project was reduced to a handful of people.
