A Pakistani family is pleading for permission to stay in Perth after their disabled son was deemed a burden on the Australian taxpayer.

Shaffan Muhammad was born with Chondrodysplasia punctata, a rare bone disorder that's left him paralysed from the neck down.

The five-year-old needs round-the-clock care and tubes to eat and breathe.

His parents migrated from Pakistan ten years ago, but Shaffan and his sister were born in Perth.

They say the Department of Home Affairs rejected their application for permanent residency, because Shaffan's medical costs are too high.

"It's quite scary, it's very devastating," father Qasim Butt told 9 News.

More than 10,000 people have signed a petition to stop the family's deportation.

They fear Shaffan can't get the same level of care in Pakistan, with doctors warning putting him on an aeroplane could be "life threatening".

The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed the Immigration Minister will look into the case, and the family can stay in Perth until a decision is made.

"This is the last chance for us and it's the last hope for Shaffan," Mr Butt said.
