Perth's CBD was in gridlock on Friday morning as climate protesters shut down streets across the city.

Police shut down parts of William Street, Mounts Bay Road and St Georges Terrace resulting in traffic chaos and fuming commuters.

The protesters, who are part of the loosely organised Extinction Rebellion movement, warned there would be civil disobedience throughout the morning.

In a written statement, the group said the disruption was necessary.

"We're sleepwalking off the cliff, and we need an urgent wake-up call, or a roadblock to stop the carnage coming soon," the statement said.

"We've tried being polite for decades – it hasn’t worked. The time for politeness is over. Now is the time for action."

Main Roads WA warned there were delays of up to 20 minutes from Mounts Bay Road to the city.

More to come.
