Drought sparks desperate and extreme behaviour for native animals Ecologists say kangaroos are eating the stomach contents of dead roos and toilet paper in national parks to survive the drought. Ecologists say kangaroos have resorted to eating the stomachs and intestines of dead kangaroos in a desperate attempt to find plant matter, due to the drought. The severity of the drought has some ecologists worried that, while some smaller native species may struggle through, overabundant species such as larger kangaroos are dying in their millions.

Two people have died after a vehicle hit a kangaroo in central Queensland before crashing into a second vehicle overnight, emergency services said.

Paramedics, including critical care officers, were called to the Bruce Highway at Kolonga, about 90 kilometres west of Bundaberg, about 9.45pm on Saturday to attend the serious accident.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said one of the vehicles burst into flames as a result of the impact.

"They extinguished the flames ... a crew had to cut a casualty out of a vehicle," he said.

"We were called at quarter to 10pm and left the scene at 4am."

The spokesman said the highway was closed for several hours while the Forensic Crash Unit investigated.
