A 23-year-old prisoner has been taken into custody after escaping the Townsville Correctional Centre in north Queensland earlier this week.

A string of public reports of a group driving recklessly around town and crashing cars led to the capture of Bodhi Johnson on Sunday afternoon.

He had been missing since Monday night.

A police spokesman said the first call was made just before 11am where a member of the public saw a car driving dangerously around Townsville.

"The group allegedly caused a car crash before getting into a second car," he said.

"They later crashed and dumped the car before they got out and fled on foot.

"Members of the public then recognised him and called triple zero but fortunately, police were already in the area and made the arrest."

No one was injured during the incidents.
