A man accused of crashing a stolen vehicle in a horrifying head-on smash that left two dead has been identified as Jordan Cubby.

The 28-year-old allegedly crashed a Mitsubishi SUV into a Mazda sedan on the Gympie Arterial Road in Bald Hills, Brisbane late on Tuesday night.

The Mazda driver, father-of-one Shahid Islam, 36, was instantly killed.

Cubby's front-seat passenger, a 32-year-old man, was also killed while a 32-year-old woman in the back seat was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Straight after the crash Cubby was arrested and reportedly spat blood at police who detained him.

He was charged with a string of offences while in his hospital bed early on Thursday morning.

Mr Islam was looking forward to move into his first newly built home with his wife, Ferdousi, and their four-year-old son before his sudden death.

'I've never heard anything bad about him. He would do anything for his family,' neighbour Maxi Haque said.

'He's a very gentle guy, humble, also used to avoid confrontation, or any complexities. He never had any trouble with anyone.'

Mr Haque said Mr Islam was meant to attend his son's school interview before he started kindergarten.

He said Mr Islam's wife, who is a nurse, has been left exhausted and 'devastated' by the incident.

The Mitsubishi SUV was stolen from Chamberlain Street in Toowoomba on October 14, police say.

Officers spotted the stolen car, which allegedly sped off, before driving on the wrong side of the road and crashing head-on into Mr Islam's Mazda sedan at about 11.50pm.

Police chose not to give chase because it would be too dangerous but officers were just 100 metres away from the crash.
