  Man dies after being shot during home invasion near Beaudesert A man is dead after being shot in the leg during a home invasion south of Brisbane in which another man was hit on the head with a hammer.Gold Coast police are investigating after the home was broken in to about 7:00am at Gleneagle north of Beaudesert leaving one man dead and another with minor head injuries.

Family and friends of an Australian father-of-two are in mourning after he was shot dead when intruders broke into his house in Texas.

Estorffe grew up on Queensland's Sunshine Coast and travelled to the US to pursue his dream of playing in the National Football League.

His American wife Angeleanna and their two children, aged one and three, were in the house at the time he was killed.

Police are still searching for the intruders.

Thy are chasing leads that a car was seen speeding away from Estorffe's home after the shooting.

Police officers have interviewed Estorffe's wife and neighbours, and are investigating whether any CCTV footage exists that could help them catch the intruders.

"It's sad, sad," Fort Bend Sheriff Troy Nehls said. "We have a homeowner here in Fort Bend County who's no longer with us. A father of two small children, breaks your heart.

  Daughter witnessed dad shot dead in home invasion A man has been shot dead and a second man attacked with a hammer during a home invasion southwest of Brisbane in the early hours of this morning. A group of up to four men broke into the home at Gleneagle near Beaudesert about 6am and shot 48-year-old father Michael Menzel in the leg. "Pray for this young wife and her two small children because they are without their father.

"He was there to protect his family."

Nehls said the shooting had happened incredibly quickly.

"You hear the glass breakage," he said.

"You're startled, you get out of bed. And then, within just a few ­seconds or so, there's gunfire."

Police do not believe any valuables were taken from the home.

Estorffe's brother Cobin, who also lives in Texas, posted on Facebook that "life will never ever be the same" without him.

"Miss you and love you so much Brenton," he wrote.

"Hands down you are my hero the way you stood up for your family.

"Can only dream to be a little bit like you.

"Thanks for the amazing times we had together."

Neighbour Kimberly Patel told local station KHOU 11 that the area was usually extremely safe.

"We’ve left our doors unlocked because we feel this is such a quiet neighbourhood," she said.

"So it’s pretty shocking to be honest."

Estorffe grew up in Mooloolaba in Queensland.

He played a season of college football for Southern Virginia University in 2012.

He also studied at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, before taking up work as a rental car manager.
