"Having been shielded from the court proceedings and media attention about the case, she is coping fairly well despite the horrific ordeal she went through," she said.

"She is surrounded by the love and care of her family and friends, and for now, normal psychological defense mechanisms are helping her.

"She has some understanding of the gravity of this terrible crime, but at such a young age, she isn't equipped to process, talk about or deal with it.

The girl's mother described the crime as "brazen" and "despicable".

"This was a planned, brazen abduction and assault, if it was not her, we are convinced it would have been someone else's child that day," she said.

"What, and how, this terrible thing was perpetrated was shocking, disgusting and despicable and even now, we are in a state of disbelief that it happened to her, to our family."

However, she said her family were grateful for the outpouring of support from the community.

In recent weeks there have been calls for the Queensland Attorney General Yvette D'Ath to appeal Free's sentence, as he will be eligible for parole in August 2020, after spending just two years and eight months behind bars.

The girl's mother said she considers the sentence to be "grossly inadequate", and the family are trying to navigate the legal system as best they can, while protecting the girl's identity.

"We do however believe this sentence is grossly inadequate for what this disgusting and dangerous perpetrator did to our little girl," she said.

A crowdfunding page has been set up by a family member, with donations to be put in a trust for the girl to access support later in life.

"This is so that when she is older, she will have the financial means to continue treatment for the physical and psychological trauma she has suffered and will continue to suffer," the girl's mother said.

The mother also thanked the Queensland Police Service for their support, and the Morcombe Foundation, who are currently providing regular counselling for the girl.

Free, a father of two, Free will be eligible for parole in August 2020.
