'Emu plucker' avoids jail time after guilty plea to animal cruelty in viral social media video
A Dubbo man is handed a community correction order and community service after pleading guilty to animal cruelty following his appearance in a video of an emu being plucked.Jye Leslie Schultz was 19-years-old at the time the video went viral on social media, depicting him finding an emu trapped in a fence and then dragging, riding, and plucking it.
Victoria's judicial watchdog has been requested to investigate a 68-year-old country magistrate over his affair with a court clerk 40 years his junior.
Magistrate Rodney Higgins met 23-year-old Ashleigh Petrie at work and the couple is now engaged.
The unconventional love match has caused a stir in the state's legal circles.

A police officer has been found guilty of stalking after terrorising his female neighbour in the Victorian Yarra Valley region for more than two years. Andrew John Tanner, a Leading Senior Constable at Victoria Police, was found guilty of five charges including stalking and engaging in sexual activity.The 45-year-old – who is also a husband and father - flashed his neighbor dozens of times in 2016. He would stand in his backyard, open his dressing gown and expose himself.Tanner's disturbing behaviour prompted his neighbour to build a tall fence between their properties.
Shadow Attorney-General Ed O'Donohue has now written to the Judicial Commission of Victoria about Mr Higgins' suitability as a magistrate.
Mr O'Donohue has raised new allegations about a serious drinking problem and Mr Higgins' relationship with Ms Petrie as reasons for an investigation.
The couple has been open about their relationship and posted photos of themselves together on social media.
The Gippsland magistrate proposed to Ms Petrie while on holiday in Fiji last month.
"The allegations, which if true, raise serious concerns about his capacity to perform his judicial duties," Mr O'Donohue told the Herald-Sun.

The watchdog will formally notify Mr Higgins about the complaint and give him an opportunity to respond.
Mr Higgins is the third magistrate to be publicly referred to the Judicial Commission of Victoria since it was established in 2017.
