Crown prosecutor Neil Adams, SC, said a friend of Mr Dillon's, James Rivera, had Mr Abu-Mahmoud in a headlock when Mr Dillon came out of his home, where his partner and young child were, armed with a knife and stabbed Mr Abu-Mahmoud four times in the back, lodging the knife there on the last blow.

He said the teenager died soon after arriving at hospital shortly after 7pm.

Mr Brasch said there was no dispute that Mr Dillon stabbed Mr Abu-Mahmoud, but said it was the defence case Mr Abu-Mahmoud wasn't in a headlock at the time.

Mr Rivera pleaded guilty to affray days before he was due to be tried alongside Mr Dillon.

Mr Adams said during his opening address to the jury that another male, who was at the time 17 and cannot be named, also pleaded guilty to lesser charges, and that he and Mr Rivera would be called to give evidence.

Police allege Mr Abu-Mahmoud's death spurred the revenge attack on Brayden Dillon, 15, who was asleep at 6am on April 14, 2017, when a masked intruder allegedly forced his way into the family's Glenfield home and shot the teenager.

Several people have since been charged over his murder and are before the courts.
