A woman has been arrested over the alleged murder of a man who was fatally stabbed at Port Augusta in South Australia's north.

Just after 11:30pm on Wednesday, police and ambulance crews were called to Meally Street after receiving reports of a man with serious stab wounds.

The 35-year-old was treated at the scene before being rushed to hospital, but died shortly after arrival.

Police said a 34-year-old local woman, who was known to the man, has been arrested for murder.

Police said the woman was found at a home on Meally Street.

Major Crime detectives and crime scene examiners from Adelaide are assisting with the investigation, and the incident is not considered random.

Police said the woman was expected to be charged today, and would face court soon after.
