At the time of Ms Edwards' disappearance, Sharon Edwards had reconnected with football coach Mr Mills, who she had met at high school, and was planning to retire.

Mr Edwards was unhappy about the rekindled romance, and is accused of driving around Grafton looking for his wife on the day she disappeared, before waiting inside her home, the court heard.

On the night of her disappearance on Saturday March 14, the 55-year-old left a Grafton pub, dropped her partner home and then drove back to her house.

Edwards is then accused of driving her body to bushland in the Lawrence area, closer to where he lived.

The prosecution said he had explained to police he left the Grafton house before the movie ended at 11.35pm.

But phone data places him in or near the house until 3.17am and then in Lawrence bushland, where his wife's phone also was, at 4.22am, Crown prosecutor Kate Ratcliffe said in her opening address to the jury.

When confronted with the phone data, Edwards claimed he had been set up, and told police his mobile had been stolen and that he discovered it on the front lawn of his Lawrence house the morning after Mrs Edwards disappeared.

The Crown Case alleges that Mr Edwards gave dozens of differing accounts, one time claiming Mrs Edwards hit her head while they were arguing and another time saying he had never seen her that night.

After giving his first statement to police, it's the Crown case he came out crying and told son Josh; "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry," and said: "I should've just walked away... she'd be alive if I went home".

The jury also heard Edwards was found with his wife's missing car key.

A nightgown she was known to wear found in the footwell of his car.

Edwards has pleaded not guilty to murder and his three sons are expected to give evidence in coming days.

The trial continues before Justice Robert Allan Hulme at Coffs Harbour.
