Officers from Brisbane Water Police District and the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were called to a house in Erina following reports of a dispute between neighbours at about 10.20pm.

When they arrived they noticed flames coming from the side of the house on The Entrance Road near Terrigal Drive. Two officers forced their way through the front door.

Once inside the officers were allegedly threatened by a man armed with an axe, before the man was shot, NSW Police said.

The 45-year-old man was treated by paramedics at the scene but died a short time later.

Fire and Rescue crew were also called.

Police established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic police.

A critical incident team from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation will be subject to independent review.

All information will be provided to the Coroner who will determine the cause of death and make findings about the events leading up to the man’s death.

About 9.30pm, police were called to a disturbance at a home on Canopy Court. Police allege the brothers became involved in a verbal fight that turned physical, and one man received an injury consistent with a stab wound. St John Ambulance took the 32-year-old injured man to Royal Perth Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. Police said the injury could have been life-threatening, but he is now stable. The man’s brother was taken to Joondalup Health Campus with minor injuries, and he was then taken to Joondalup Police Station to be interviewed.
