A young father charged with murdering his seven-week-old son has undiagnosed mental health problems and could be vulnerable in custody, a court has heard.

Joseph William McDonald is accused of fatally injuring Lucas McDonald, who was admitted to a Benalla hospital on October 25 and was later transferred to Monash Children’s Hospital, where he died last week.

Mr McDonald, 22, on Monday appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court, which heard he required medical help because he had undiagnosed mental-health issues and was at risk of self-harm.

Defence counsel Tony Hargreaves said his client had never been in custody before and would be vulnerable given ‘‘the nature of the offence’’.
