AGL's 210-megawatt Barker Inlet Power Station is in a testing phase and will be commissioned within weeks.

"This power station is highly efficient, with generating units capable of operating at full capacity within five minutes of starting. This is something not capable from older coal and gas power stations," chief executive Brett Redman said on Monday.

While no coal power stations closed in 2017, the government’s official assessment points out that a carbon tax and relatively low gas prices have hurt the profitability of coal plants . As a result, it foresees one major plant will close this year, with the loss of up to 250 jobs, followed by a further closure next

AGL said the new power plant was the first major dispatchable power station built in Australia since 2012.

It will help meet the needs of the National Electricity Market, using the largest gas engine available to provide back-up power to renewable energy.

Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor said the extra generating capacity would improve the reliability of the South Australian power grid and help lower prices.

"The station will be able to operate at full capacity in just five minutes. This rapid response time adds reliability to the grid, ensuring the lights stay on when solar and wind supply decreases," the minister said.

South Australian Energy Minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan said the plant would play an important role in producing more affordable, reliable and cleaner electricity.

"Modern fast start gas generators burn less gas and provide supply when renewables can't, meaning lower cost, lower emissions and greater reliability," he said.

AGL said the Adelaide facility was part of $2 billion worth of generation and other projects currently in the company's pipeline to help deliver affordable and reliable power.

France extends nuclear reactors outage after earthquake .
French utility EDF on Tuesday extended outages at three nuclear reactors at its Cruas plant until Nov. 15 following a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in southeast France that forced it to temporarily suspend electricity generation at the site. A sensor at the plant was activated during the earthquake in the region on Monday, requiring the state-controlled utility to carry out further checks for potential damage.
